Hickory Flat Public Library Announces Closure for Upcoming Renovation Project

CANTON, GA (Nov. 1, 2022) – The Hickory Flat Public Library in Canton, located at 2740 East Cherokee Drive, will be closing to the public beginning November 26 to prepare for an upcoming renovation and expansion of its facilities in 2023.

RENOVATION PLANS

The project, which is scheduled to last approximately twelve months, includes a renovation of the Hickory Flat Public Library building, originally built in 1993. By renovating the 10,000 sq. ft. building and expanding the facilities by an additional 7,800 sq. ft., the Hickory Flat community will have more space for books and technology; larger areas for programs, meetings, collaboration, and creation; and additional seating for study and quiet reading.

Construction is projected to begin in January 2023 and is being handled by Hollandsworth Construction.

FUNDING & GRANTS

Funding for this project is available from Cherokee County’s SPLOST program. Additional funding includes a $2,000,000 Capital Outlay Grant, administered by the Georgia Public Library Service. These grants are funded by the sale of bonds and must be approved by the state legislature.

CLOSURE DETAILS

The Hickory Flat Public Library building will be closed to the public, beginning November 26, for the entirety of the construction. To prepare the building for closure, reservations to use the Hickory Flat Public Library’s Community Room will no longer be accepted. Free Wi-Fi will still be available in the parking lot of the Hickory Flat Public Library through December 23.

LIBRARY PROGRAMMING

Library programming, such as weekly storytimes and upcoming holiday events, will continue and take place at all other Sequoyah Regional Library System (SRLS) locations. To view the library’s full programming schedule and register for events, visit CalendarWiz.com/SequoyahRegLib.

“During the Hickory Flat Public Library’s construction, our community can still maintain library access by using their library card at any of our neighboring locations in the Sequoyah Regional Library System”, says Angela Cortellino, Executive Director of SRLS. “We encourage patrons of the Hickory Flat Public Library to visit these locations, which will continue to offer the full range of library services they have come to know and expect.”

The nearest SRLS libraries to the Hickory Flat location are the R.T. Jones Memorial Library at 116 Brown Industrial Parkway in Canton and the Woodstock Public Library at 7735 Main Street.
